Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the number portability (MNP) services formally for users, who are willing to switch to another operator without changing their existing numbers.

The premier inaugurated the service at a function at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital.

Sheikh Hasina said, “We are taking another step to build digital Bangladesh. A small number of the countries in the world are using the modern technology to switch from one operator to another without changing the existing number. We are in that era.”

Post, Telecom and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar and State Minister to ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak, among others, attended the program.

Earlier, the much-awaited MNP services were introduced commercially on a trial basis in Bangladesh on October 1.

With this Bangladesh became the 72nd country to make the services available.

The services have opened up the users’ freedom of choice in switching to any network, keeping the existing number unchanged.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) announced the launching of the MNP services at a press conference on October 1.
